How to use essential oils like an aromatherapist
So you have you’ve found your AROMATIC, now what?
There are so many ways to apply essential oils to your skin and life — perfume, drops in the bath or applying like body lotion is the just beginning.
Here are some tips IN’s own essential oil guru and holistic practitioner — Trish Ronning, on some effective ways to use essential oils.
OM & AAH: MEDITATION
“I incorporate essential oils in meditation,” Trish says. “I can’t wear perfumes to work since they will interfere with the other aromas I am working with, so I like to breathe oils during meditation to help relax or engage deeper with a particular intention.”
While this is a great method to try with any oil – Trish especially recommends stress relieving oil blends with that contain calming vetiver – try INNERCALM Aromatic, and grounding patchouli – try RESTORE Aromatic.
HOW IT WORKS: Inhaling essential oils stimulates the olfactory nerves (sense of smell), sending signals to the brain’s limbic system, which, in turn, triggers an emotional, physiological and immune system response.
TRY IT AT HOME: Pour a few drops into your palms, rub together and cup around your nose and mouth, inhale deeply.
HEEL & SOLE: ESSENTIAL OIL FOOT RUBS
Trish recommends massaging diluted essential oils into the bottoms of your feet – the oils will naturally make their way to the area of the body in need.
HOW IT WORKS: Ancient Eastern Medicine used reflexology as a method of activating healing powers of throughout the body, believing that every organ and muscle can be accessed via a point or zone on the sole of the foot or palm of the hand.
Don’t worry! You don’t to be a certified reflexologist to apply the basic principles of the practice. Feet are one of the best diffusers of oil and will naturally spread the oil through the entire body.
TRY IT AT HOME: Dilute oils by adding to a dollop of lotion, coconut or jojoba oil. Pour the mixture into the palms of your hands and rub together to warm it up. Rub into the soles of feet in long strokes from the toes to the heel.
Press into the big toe for a quick mood lift. Massage the inner side of each foot for stress relief. For an overall boost: draw a line down from the second toe to just below the ball of the foot until you find a hollow. Press and hold for 20 seconds, then release slowly. Try this three times, breathing in as you press in and exhaling as you breathe out.
“With any method, visualization is very important,” says Trish. “As you meditate or massage the oils into your skin – visualize the area you are working to heal.”
WHY IT WORKS: Energy flows through your body and pools in areas we call chakras. Drawing your attention to a particular zone of your body, sending positive thoughts and imagining charging them with good energy is a healing activity in itself and the basis for the holistic practice of reiki.
Each of the 7 chakras of the body corresponds with a color of the rainbow. Starting from the spine up the colors go in order for each energy center (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) these associate with a particular vibrational frequency in the universe that influences well being.
TRY IT AT HOME:As you meditate, massage oils into your feet or just when applying the oils after the shower, imagine a wheel spinning face-up in a clockwise direction in the specific color of each chakra.
