Typically shampoos and cleansers use sulfate surfactant systems. Surfactants are what carries away dirt and oil without leaving any residue. Many of them are made with either sodium lauryl sulfate or sodium laureth sulfate, to create lots of bubbles and foam, but in reality, have very little to do with cleansing. Known to be skin irritants, they weaken your skin’s barrier function, which over time makes it prone to absorption of other toxic ingredients, such as petrochemicals and their derivatives. How do conditioners do their thing? For hair conditioners to work well they need something called “slip,” or the ability to spread their good stuff around—smoothing the hair after it’s been “roughed up” by the washing process—and making it shine. Two ingredients commonly used to perform this function are Quaternary Ammonium Compounds (quats) and silicones.
