A Message From R & D: What is an aphrodisiac and where can I get some?

This Valentine's Day, everyone is looking for that special someone. The question long on the minds of scientists and romantics alike is, what attracts us to others? What attracts others to us? Will that perfume or this oyster make others flock to me? In reality, no one can really answer that. Why or how we fall in love is truly one of the greatest mysteries.

An aphrodisiac is defined as any food or substance that arouses the sexual instinct and/or increases pleasure and performance. Many people are familiar with the reputed sexy qualities of oysters, ginseng and Spanish fly. Now the important question is "Do these actually work?" The answer appears to be yes and no. Scientists have recently attempted to isolate the chemical compounds in supposed aphrodisiacs, and have come up with some interesting findings. Yohimbe bark has been used in West Africa as a sexual tonic for many years, and has been analyzed to contain the indole alkaloid yohimbine. This alkaloid is in the testing process to verify its ability to treat impotence in men. Spanish fly (Mylabris phalerata) has quite a reputation, and is still used in China as an aphrodisiac. But please note, the active ingredient in the compound, cantharidine, is toxic at 32 mg.

These are some facts for men, but what about for women? Modern researchers have been looking into hydroiodic acid, but it appears a woman's best bet is her own brain. Here at Intelligent Nutrients, our favorite herb is Maca, a Peruvian mountain root. Maca is also known as "Peruvian ginseng", though it isn't in the ginseng family. Maca is believed to support the immune system and be a sexual stimulant.* It contains many nutrients such as Vitamins B1, B2, B12, C and E, Minerals like calcium, iron, zinc, and iodine. There is also the compound p-methobenzyl isothiocyanate, which is the one reputed to have aphrodisiac qualities. The glucosinolates, or signal substances contained in cruciferous vegetables, are thought to give enhanced fertility effects. As an all-around energizer, one can hardly go wrong with Maca.

    Horst's Corner
Taken from Horst's new book, Alivelihood

"One of the keys to true success in life is the ability to forgive and generate compassion for others. Holding onto resentments blocks our flow of energy and creates a tremendous amount of inner stress and dis-ease, so although we may attain success in the world outside, we will not experience it within ourselves."

Aliveness: The Art of Sustainable Success, by Horst M. Rechelbacher, p. 11
